Joe Chiccarelli talks about recording killer drums, guitars, and vocals among other things...

My guest today is Joe Chiccarelli a ten time Grammy Award-Winning Producer/Engineer & Mixer who has been making great records for more than 3 decades. Joe’s credits include such artists as Tori Amos, Beck, The Strokes, The Killers, U2, Elton John, My Morning Jacket, Spoon, The Shins, The White Stripes, Morrissey, Christina Perri, Alanis Morrisette, Jason Mraz, Cafe Tacuba, and The Raconteurs for which he received his eighth Grammy award, for Best Engineered Album of 2008 for "Consolers of The Lonely." Joe got his first big break with one of my favorite artists, Frank Zappa, in 1979 recording Sheik Yerbouti, Joe’s Garage Acts I&II, Shut Up And Play Yer Guitar, and Tinsel Town Rebellion.

When asked about recording the sound of the Central Scrutinizer with Frank Zappa, Joe said: “Frank was a gentleman and a total visionary. An absolute pleasure to work with on all occasions. The Central Scrutinizer was simply Frank speaking into a megaphone off axis on a Neumann M 49. UMRK was great. Initially a Harrison console and later a Neve. Designed by Rudy Bruer with a really great sounding live echo chamber.” JC
