RSR233 – Evan Bakke – Recording Prince at Paisley Park and Engineering at Power Station NE

Evan broke down his vocal chain for Prince at Paisley Park, how to take session notes like a pro and organize your Pro Tools sessions and mixing tips for your next session.

My guest today is Evan Bakke, the Chief Engineer at Power Station New England in Waterford, Conn. Originally from Minneapolis, MN Evan started working under producers, Matt Kirkwold and James “Fluff” Harley at MasterMix studios and the Boiler Room, and also at PoundSound in St. Paul partnering on many projects with Producer/Mixer Jeremy Tappero.

In 2009 he spent a couple of years in La Paz, Bolivia South America and built a recording studio in Che Guevara’s old house before ending up back in Minneapolis to work as Prince’s personal recording engineer in 2013-14. More recently in 2015 Evan and his wife moved to Connecticut to become the chief engineer at Power Station NE.

I’ve put together a playlist of Evan’s work in the blog show notes and the tracks are a variety of consistently great-sounding recordings in different genres. So I am psyched to dig into some great recording techniques with Evan, learn more about running a pro studio in CT, and perhaps even here some cool stories about working with Prince.
