RSR238 – Richard Dodd – Grammy Winning Mixing Tips and Other Cool Stuff

Richard talked about mixing, getting the most out of fewer drum mics, getting a killer bass sound, Mike Cambell's guitar amp miking trick, and the power of mixing in mono. Plus a ton of cool insights into mixing.

My guest today is Richard Dodd, A multi-platinum Grammy-winning producer, recording engineer, and mastering engineer with 40 years of amazing credits to his discography. Richard has worked with a long list of artists including Boz Scaggs, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Wilco, Green Day, Steve Earle, Delbert McClinton, Robert Plant, Roger Daltry, the Travelling Wilburys, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Freddie Mercury to name just a few.

Richard was on the podcast previously for episode RSR096 where we got an introduction to his background story. So on this episode, I thought we would try to focus on mixing.

One of the skills that Richard said he aspires to in recording is learning to stay out of the way and not screw up what the artist is wanting to create. With that in mind, I know Richard can be bold in his mixing and mastering choices. So I’m excited to learn more about his thoughts on creating compelling and memorable records.

RSR229 – Matty Harris – How to Write Mix & Master Hip Hop

Matty talked about going from #1 in iTunes to sleeping on a floor mattress in LA, cowriting hip hop as a producer, abandoning Pro Tools for Studio One, and how to find and keep clients coming back through your studio website.

My guest today is Matty Harris a music producer, mixing and mastering engineer originally from Boston. As a young musician, he won several awards, including best drummer in New England touring with jazz, blues and calypso bands, playing clubs by the age of 14. And later went on to Berklee College of Music to study Music Production and Engineering.

Matty work in the studio includes credits for Atlantic, RCA, & Warner Bros Records, Sammy Adams, A$AP Rocky, Logic, Lil Yachty, Cousin Stizz and the Grammy Award-winning song “Stronger” for Kelly Clarkson winning the 2008 Boston Music Award for Best Hip-Hop Engineer and Producer.

Matty now lives in Los Angeles where he also runs a cool YouTube Channel teaching you how to create music in the studio called Mix And Master My Song which also happens to be the name of his website and studio where he works with artists from all over the world.

Today we are going to find out more about Matty's story of moving from Boston to LA to pursue music, and see what we can learn about the best tools and techniques for creating, mixing, and mastering your music in the studio.
