RSR227 – Bill Cheney – Spectra 1964 Sound of Record Plant, Stax Studio, Ardent, and Easy Eye Sound

Bill talked about the history of Spectra Sonics and Spectra 1964, designing the C610 complimiter and STX100 mic pres, how to understand transients and peak limiting, and stories of Record Plant NY, Roy Cicalla, Tom Dowd, Stax Studios and much more!

My guest today is Bill Cheney owner of Spectra 1964 originally Spectra Sonics makers of the famous 101 mic pres and sound of Stax Records in Memphis. You have heard Spectra Sonics records by Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen, ZZ Top, Emerson Lake and Palmer, King Crimson, John Lennon, and more than we can count.

I first learned about Spectra Sonics years ago working at my friend Brian Cater’s studio Paradox Productions here in Nashville using his 610 Comp Limiter and never forgot how cool it sounded and looked in his control room. And when I spotted Spectra 1964 at the NAMM conference and saw the amazing work that Bill Cheney is doing with Spectra 1964 by recreating the C610 and V610 CompLimiters, and introducing the STX100 and STX500 mic preamps and eq I knew that I would need to learn more.

So I am excited to invite Bill Cheney to the podcast today to learn what we can about the amazing history of Spectra 1964, the studios that have made so many iconic records, the design philosophy behind old and new Spectra Sonics, and what ways we can improve our sound in our studios and better understand things like peak limiting and signal chain.

RSR226 – Alex Oana – Which Mic Should You Buy? Audio Test Kitchen

Alex talked about making records at the old Twin Tone studio in MN, recording perfectly identical drums with robots, how you can find the ideal microphone for your studio at Audio Test Kitchen and much more.

My guest today is Alex Oana, an engineer, producer originally from Minneapolis now living in Los Angeles. From his studios, in both locations, he has produced hundreds of records over 30 years and been the recipient of 11 Minnesota Music Awards.

Alex is also the creator and co-founder with Ian Hlatky of Audio Test Kitchen, an online resource for seeing, hearing, and auditioning over 300 microphones from the comfort of your own studio. Intending to solve the frustrating experience of wanting to know what a microphone or any piece of audio gear sounds like before committing to what can often be an expensive purchase for your studio. Alex decided to create a place where you can go now to check out a product for your studio that you might be considering and make comparisons until you find the right fit just like a pair of jeans at your favorite store. Or even just go there to have fun listening to what all the different mics sound like to satisfy your curiosity.

Today we’ll talk with Alex about what it took to create the world’s first online pro audio showroom, what you can find there now, and what you can expect to find there in the future. And also how you can use this knowledge to help you make better records in your studio.

RSR225 – Harold LaRue – How To Do Pro Mastering In Your DAW

Harold talked about the growth of the mastering industry, the power of great production, how to reference your mix and master against your favorite hits, and how to master your song like a pro in any DAW! Plus lots more..

My guest today is Harold LaRue a mastering engineer and audio educator based in Houston, Texas. Harold started out playing drums and running live sound in the 80’s and worked as a software developer and pro audio repair technician before meeting his wife, Elizabeth, an accomplished restaurateur; together, they built and operated several popular restaurants and a recycling company before he returned to his passion for recording and music production.

Harold studied with Producer/Engineer, Ronan Chris Murphy (also on the podcast RSR015), and learned the theatrical sound trade as a Union Journeyman on Broadway shows and other large-scale productions.

Harold shares his knowledge and experience with universities and recording schools across the country, provides technical support and consulting services to recording industry professionals, and operates a full-time mastering business, working on projects for artists including Macy Gray and R&B legend, Jeffrey Osborne.

Step-by-step process for using Pro Tools for mastering

*Create 'MASTER' Stereo Aux Track, assign to Target Output (Output 1-2 here), ** SOLO SAFE this track **

* Create 'PRINT BUS' Send on 'MASTER' Track, set to Unity Gain (0.0 dB), Assign to an unused Bus with ** NO DESTINATION or TARGET OUTPUT ** This is a Bus to Nowhere.

* Create 'Master' Stereo Master Fader, assigned to new 'MASTER' Track, use Inserts for your Stereo Bus plugins

* Create 'MON' Stereo Master Fader, assign to Target Output (Output 1-2), Use Inserts for metering, reference plugins ** Place Sonarworks plugin LAST in chain **

* Assign Outputs from your Session's Audio Tracks, Auxes, etc to the 'MASTER' Track

*When Bouncing your session, choose the 'PRINT BUS' Bus as your Source for audio.

This is my workaround for Pro Tools not having a dedicated Monitoring Section, like Cubase and many other DAWs.

This is my default PT Template configuration, so you only have to do this once.
