RSR132 – Mac Gayden – Session Guitar Player, Nashville Cats, Barefoot Jerry, Area Code 615

A session guitar player with The Nashville Cats, recording with Tom Dowd at Criteria Studios, the difference between a Nashville vs Muscle Shoals recording session, and much more!

My guest today is Mac Gayden, a successful songwriter, producer, and guitar player. He is also considered a musician’s musician for his intricate playing. He started playing guitar in Nashville as a teenager in the 1960s and quickly become a top session guitar player playing on iconic records such as Bob Dylan’s Blonde On Blonde.

Mac was also known for his unique slide guitar sound through a wah pedal made famous on JJ Cale’s record Crazy Mama. And years later in 2013 He was finally inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame as one of the original “Nashville Cats”.

As a songwriter Mac wrote “Everlasting Love” covered by many great artists including Carl Carlton, Robert Knight, U2, and Gloria Estefan. It has the distinction of being one of only two songs to ever have hit status every decade for the past 40 years.

As a top session player Mac helped found to critically acclaimed super groups in the 70s, Barefoot Jerry, and Area Code 615 both of which recorded with Wayne Moss at his famous home studio Cinderella Sound in Madison TN (about 10 miles north of here).

Mac has played on records with with many great artists including John Hiatt, Kris Kristofferson, Leonard Cohen, Simon & Garfunkel, Loudon Wainwright, Rita Coolidge, and Robert Knight. He is an open book of Nashville music history.

RSR131 – How To Sound Analog In A Digital World with Johnnie Truesdale – Recording Steve Martin, Tony Bennett, and Harry Belafonte

Johnnie talked about recording bluegrass with Steve Martin, getting an old school analog sound in your DAW, and using software guitar simulators.

My guest today is Johnnie Truesdale, a Grammy winning engineer, producer, mastering engineer, and audio teacher. Starting at Bennett Studios in Englewood, New Jersey with classic artists such as: Steve Martin, Tony Bennett, Harry Belafonte, Anita Baker, Ravi Coltrane, John Patitucci, and Andy LaVerne. He also got experience working with great producers like Phil Ramone and John McEwen.

In 2011, he moved to Los Angeles to become a teacher at SAE Institute in Los Angeles.  And recently moved to Nashville to build his own recording, mixing, and mastering Studio, FireFly Sound, in Brentwood, TN.

Today we have incredible digital tools available to us in the studio through modern DAWs and plugins that can do things that were never even possible 10 or 20 years ago. But sometimes we find ourselves making records that can feel a little too digital, and long for the sound of the classic analog albums that we grew up with.

Johnnie has experience working with both analog, and digital, and is going to talk about he gets the best of both worlds in the studio. So the theme of today’s episode is to learn How To Sound Analog In A Digital World.

Softube Modular – Doepfer, Intellijel, & Heartbeat Review – Awesome Preset Sounds Walkthrough!

Softube Modular - Doepfer, Intellijel, & Heartbeat Review - Awesome Preset Sounds Walkthrough!

The Softube Modular plugin with the Doepfer Eurorack, Intellijel, and Heartbeat drum machine is one of the coolest plugins I have ever heard!

I have always been hooked on synthesizers ever since my grade school friend showed me his Radio Shack Realistic sound fx maker and Moog Concertmate MG-1 back in the 1970s. And I even had some chances to learn analog subtractive synthesis when I was in high school and college on classics like the ARP 2600 and 5200.

There is nothing quite like the feeling of turning knobs to create sounds from other worlds that make you think of sci-fi movies and giant robots. Occasionally I feel like I could even do without the music part as long as I can create wild and cool sounds that modulate all day long!

But these days it can be pretty hard to (and expensive) to find hardware synths to keep the passion alive. So when I saw that Softube had designed a modular system that will allow you to build digital versions of analog synths I knew I had to check it out.

I got ahold of Softube Modular with the Doepfer Eurorack modular system, Intellijel, and Heartbeat drum machine. There is a whole world of possibilities in here. And the best way to check these out is of course to try out a demo and see what you can do with them yourself.  However in the end the only part that really matters to you is "How do they sound??" right?

So here are a couple of videos where I walk you through the presets as fast as I can to give you a quick overview of how this awesome modular plugins from Softube actually sound:

From the Softube Website:

MODULAR

Buchla and Moog started it all with their modular synthesizers in the 1960s. Doepfer made it affordable in the 1990s by introducing the Eurorack standard. Today, the Modular plug-in from Softube makes the modular synthesizer truly accessible to everyone.

Click to show Softube Modular

Created in close collaboration with Doepfer, Softube Modular gives you both the sound, flexibility and expandability of a true analog modular synthesizer. But Softube Modular is more than just another virtual synthesizer plug-in—it's an entirely new modular synth standard.

Softube Modular is a revolutionary virtual modular synthesizer. I finally have a way to patch and experiment on the go with my laptop. So far its been incredibly fun, and I am looking forward to all the new modules they will add!

Richard Devine, Electronic artist and music producer (Warp, Schematic)

Infinitely Expandable
As a Modular owner, the basic system gives you a great toolkit to start out with. It includes six modeled Doepfer modules and over 20 utility modules. But there is much more to discover. Additional modules from quality Eurorack vendors—starting with a range of units from cutting-edge manufacturer Intellijel—are available for separate purchase. More modules will continuously be made available. Owners of Softube's drum synth Heartbeat can add its instrument and EQ modules to Modular and combine them with any other modules. Softube's award-winning engineering team have modeled each analog module, component by component, and the resulting plug-ins are sonically indistinguishable from their hardware counterparts.

A synthesists dream come true, a high quality virtual Eurorack experience!

Christoffer Berg, Programmer, mixer and producer for Depeche Mode, The Knife and Fever Ray.

Want to start with the 20 day demo?

Welcome Experts—And Beginners
Experienced Eurorack synth users will be right at home from the start. Modular's workflow is very close to the use of physical Eurorack modular synths. Add modules, connect them using virtual patch cords, adjust their knobs and switches to your heart's desire. Get MIDI connectivity with the MIDI To CV/Gate Converter and add any of the included step sequencers—unless you prefer using your DAW's built-in sequencer, of course.

To beginners, a modular synthesizer can be daunting at first. But Modular offers a wide range of expertly designed presets, immediately available to be put to use in your music. When you are ready to learn more about patching a Eurorack synth, the manual offers step by step patching tutorials that go hand in hand with the included tutorial presets.

We have been getting to know Softube Modular for nearly a year now, we're really impressed by its functionality but most of all by its sound. Its 'analogueness' became irrelevant when we started playing, the oscillators and filter modules have deep and detailed sound, reassuring foundations for modular building.

Ed Handley and Andy Turner (Plaid), Electronic artists

Both experts and beginners will enjoy the included Performance modules. These give the user a limited set of knobs and buttons that can be freely assigned to control any parameter on any module in the current patch—making creative tweaking on the fly super easy and accessible for inspired studio production and live performances.

In Short

  • Modular is a cross-platform modular synthesizer plug-in standard, which features authorized emulations of modules from well known hardware Eurorack brands
  • True dynamic circuit-emulation—looks, functions and sounds like its hardware counterparts

RSR124 – Mike Senior- The Tao Of Facepalm – Important Failures You are making In Your Home Studio And How To Turn Into Big Wins

Mike talks about the importance of mistakes in the studio, and shares some great tips for recording drums, bass, guitars, and vocals!

My guest today is Mike Senior, a professional recording and mixing engineer, who has worked with artists such as The Charlatans, Reef, Therapy, Nigel Kennedy, and Wet Wet Wet.

In October 1999, he joined the editorial department of Sound On Sound magazine as the Reviews Editor for six years and also launched both the popular 'Studio SOS' and 'Mix Rescue' columns.

Since turning freelance, he has specialised in project-studio production and become one of Sound On Sound's most prolific contributors, performing more than 50 Mix Rescue remixes, launching the regular Session Notes recording-technique feature, and critiquing more than 350 commercial releases in his monthly Mix Review column.

In 2011 he published the best-selling book 'Mixing Secrets For The Small Studio', and its sequel 'Recording Secrets For The Small Studio' followed in 2014. Alongside his audio and writing work, Mike also hosts the well-known Cambridge-MT educational resources website, which includes the web's largest free multitrack download library as well as thousands of recording and mixing audio demonstrations.

Today Mike is going to talk about the power of mistakes in the studio, and just how valuable they can be as out teachers and guides. He is also going to teach us 4 important mistakes that you are probably making in the studio, and how to turn those from big failures into bigger wins.

Mike's Wild Stereo Mic Test:

All my Mix Review critiques or commercial productions are freely available to read online. Here's a full listing of them all with links: http://cambridge-mt.com/MikeSeniorFull.htm#MixReview

And, specifically, here are a few of those specific critiques where I discuss tracks which I suspect contain engineering mistakes: Hilary Hahn: Christos Hatzis 'Coming To' (check out the strange stereo imaging artefacts) http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan16/articles/mix-review-0116.htm#para1

Rudimental (featuring John Newman): 'Feel The Love' (odd mono-incompatible low end) https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/mix-review-10#para1

Labrinth (featuring Emeli Sandé): 'Beneath Your Beautiful' (sounds suspiciously like the CD album version was mastered from an MP3) https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/mix-review-6#para3

Classic Mix: Bing Crosby: 'White Christmas' (was the balance engineer napping during Bing's opening phrase?) http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/dec13/articles/themixreview-1213.htm#para4

Classic Mix: The Police: 'Roxanne' (Sting sits on the piano keyboard and there's some clunky editing)

For the business questions, there's one book that's really influenced me with regards to the positive power of mistakes: Matthew Syed's 'Black Box Thinking'. If you want a flavour of what he has to say, check out his TEDX talk at the London Business School: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmVCYqs3mko

My own personal recommendations for project-studio loudspeakers and headphones for mixing:

http://www.cambridge-mt.com/ms-ch1.htm#links

http://www.cambridge-mt.com/ms-ch2.htm#links

This one I'll illustrate by talking about my struggles with stereo recording technique. In the end, the guy who I most trust these days on the subject is called Helmut Wittek, who has an excellent resources website here: http://www.hauptmikrofon.de/us/helmut-wittek

In particular, he has developed an app for Schopes called IMA3 which provides really useful guidance on how to set up all manner of stereo microphone techniques, as well as information about their unique sonic characteristics: http://www.ima.schoeps.de/

My favourite book on the subject of perceptual bias is Thaler & Sunstein's classic 'Nudge' -- in just 20 pages, the first chapter lists a half-dozen peceptual biases that I struggle with all the time, both in and out of the studio.

The other killer bias in studios is, of course, loudness bias, and here are three situations you have to be really careful about it: - When parallel compressing: it's really easy to end up making an instrument louder if you're adding the compressed signal via a separate mixer channel.

- When multimiking any instrument: add in any extra microphone, and it'll make the resulting sound louder.

- When EQing: if you use a lot of boosts, you'll make the sound louder in addition to adjusting its tone.

DRUMS - In dry-sounding rooms, try using more than two overheads. Here's a free web article (with audio files) about a session where I used two pairs of overheads rather than one: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/apr13/articles/session-notes-0413.htm

RECORDING ACOUSTIC GUITARS - demonstrates (with audio files) how good they can sound: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan16/articles/session-notes-0116.htm

Here's that audio example I mentioned of a figure-eight guitar mic two feet from the singer (http://audio.cambridge-mt.com/CMTWorkshops/PSE_RecordingMistakes/AES0306_Figure8GuitarSeparation.mp3)

ELECTRIC GUITARS - Multimiking. Here's another free web article with audio demonstrations of that technique in practice: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/aug13/articles/session-notes-0813.htm

VOCAL RECORDING - Try speaker foldback. Here are some audio examples that demonstrate the effectiveness of various different foldback-spill-reduction techniques: http://www.cambridge-mt.com/rs-ch5.htm#audio

MIXING - Mix referencing is the king of all small-studio mixing techniques. Here's an article about choosing and using mix references: https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/creating-your-own-reference-cd
