Join me and my friends as I head off to Summer NAMM 2017 in Nashville TN. This is the National Association of Music Merchants and a great opportunity to learn about the newest instruments, amps, hardware and software in the music industry. This year I was fortunate to host a large group of guest audio bloggers, Youtubers, podcasters, producers, and mastering engineers at my studio, The Toy Box Studio. I also got a chance to interview Matt McGlynn from Roswell Pro Audio microphones, and ask some fun questions of random conference goers.

Also here are some great NAMM videos from my friends Chris Selim and Pete Woj too!

RSR097 – Will Pugh – Producing, Recording, and Mixing Top 40 Songs – Cartel

Please share this episode using the buttons above. So more Rockstars find the podcast!

Will Pugh talks about vocal production, recording in small spaces, and mix tricks that helped him reach the Top 40.

Will Pugh is the main songwriter in the Gold selling band, Cartel. Will is also a producer, mixer, artist, and is a friend of our previous guest Bobby Holland, with a room at the same studio, Pentavarit.

Will's records with Cartel have sold over half a million copies and he’s notched two Top 40 hits under his belt. I am psyched to be joining Will in his studio for this interview, and plan to get into some great questions about producing, recording, and mixing a top 40 hit.

Please share this episode using the buttons above. So more Rockstars find the podcast!

Stories about engineering & producing The Traveling Wilburys.

My guest today is someone who has been suggested by more of my guests than any other producer or engineer. At nearly 100 episodes into the podcast I am thrilled to have Richard Dodd on the show today, a multi platinum Grammy winning producer, recording engineer, and mastering engineer with 40 years of amazing credits to his discography.

Richard began recording hits in the 1970’s like “Kung Fu Fighting,” and has since distinguished himself many times over while working with artists Boz Scaggs, Stephane Grappelli, George Harrison, Clannad, Roy Orbison, Wilco, Green Day, Steve Earle, Delbert McClinton, Robert Plant, Roger Daltry, the Travelling Wilburys, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Freddie Mercury, Placido Domingo, and many more.

In 1995 he won the Best Engineer Grammy Award for Tom Petty's "Wildflowers", best Blues Album in 2001 for “Nothing Personal” by Delbert McClinton, and multiple Grammys in 2007 for the Dixie Chicks "Taking the Long Way". While in the Country market, Richard has Mastered all of Jason Aldean's Platinum albums plus all 13 of Jason's # 1 Hit singles.

Brad Wood

RSR095 – Brad Wood – Producing Liz Phair, Veruca Salt & Smashing Pumpkins

Please share this episode using the buttons above. So more Rockstars find the podcast!

Brad talks about defining the indi rock sound of the 90s in Chicago with Liz Phair, Veruca Salt, and Smashing Pumpkins.

My guest today is Brad Wood, a producer originally from Chicago now in Los Angeles, who is known for making some of the coolest indi and rock albums since the late 80s. Brad also owned Idful Music Corporation- a small but mighty recording studio in Wicker Park, where he recorded albums by bands like Seam, Tar, Shrimp Boat and Eleventh Dream Day.

In 1993 he produced what I consider to be one of the greatest records ever, Exile In Guyville, for Liz Phair. This was a record that really struck a chord with me because it was so honest, didn’t seem to care what anybody else was doing. It somehow discarded everything that I thought I was supposed to know about songwriting and musicianship, and ended up with a collection of amazing hit songs. Exile In Guyville opened the door for my understanding of what made a great record, and for Brad and his career as a producer.

He has and continues to produce many important artists like Veruca Salt, Sunny Day Real Estate, Thrill Jockey, Placebo, Smashing Pumpkins, Pete Yorn, mewithoutYou, Touché Amoré, and Ben Lee among others.

“I like to help people make records that are inspiring, lyrically and musically. For me, rock music works best when there's intensity- a burning desire to bash out a message. It doesn't have to be loud (although that helps). Thank you, Joe Strummer.”

RSR093 – Bonnaroo 2017 Hay Bale Studio – Behind the Scenes

Please share this episode using the buttons above. So more Rockstars find the podcast!

Hear stories behind the scenes of Bonnaroo 2017 at the Hay Bale Studio.

Today’s episode is a special one! We are here on-site at Bonnaroo, a music festival just an hour south of Nashville, TN. We are recording a band every hour, two to three songs, mixing it live and mastering it immediately so that the music can go directly out on radio stations all over the country.

We’ll be chatting with the team, getting some great stories, and answering as many questions as we can about what goes into producing, mixing, mastering, and putting out on the radio so many great songs in one four-day weekend.
