RSR454 – Joe Hutchinson – How To Master A Record

My guest today is Joe Hutchinson, a mastering engineer at Garage Masters in Nashville, TN where Joe has been providing mastering services for over 10 years.

Joe works in a well-designed room built in 2022 and uses a combination of analog and digital tools to give each song or project what it needs. Every project is different, and what happens in mastering can vary from heavy-handed processing to being almost transparent. Often mastering will catch little things missed in the production/mixing process since a mastering engineer offers a fresh set of ears, and in that sense acts as the quality control at the end of the recording process.

Joe was my mastering engineer at the Hay Bale Studio at Bonnaroo for many years and has been a guest on the podcast for episode RSR013 where you can hear his backstory. Today we will talk about what's new in mastering and see what we can learn for our own studios as well.

RSR453 – Todd Burke – How To Make Records Sound Cool

My guest today is Todd Burke who has been recording and mixing records and underscores in Los Angeles for over 25 years. His album credits include Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, The Kooks, Belle and Sebastian, M83, and Fitz and the Tantrums.

More recently, he has been enjoying mixing Atmos versions of records by Albert Hammond Jr, Christina Perri, and Jeff Goldblum and working as a Score Mixer. A few notable films include The Big Sick, Daddy's Home 1 & 2, Second Act, I Feel Pretty, The Lovebirds, Stargirl, The King of Staten Island, Yes Day, and The Bubble. He also dabbles a bit in Album Mastering with recent projects for The Lickerish Quartet, Motochrist, and Greyboy Allstars.

As a teacher he’s a main contributor on the recordBetter project and is passionate about handing the art of record making on to young creators. And he is a Brand Ambassador and Artist Representative for Antelope Audio.

He’s available for engineering bookings in Los Angeles and abroad. Favorite tracking rooms include Sunset Sound and Capitol Studios. His own studio, affectionately coined Listening Room LA, is in the foothills east of LA and outfitted with an Aurora Audio 10 channel sidecar, a 24 channel Aurora Audio GTM Mixer, the most modern generation of digital conversion from Antelope Audio and Chord Electronics, ATMOS monitoring on an array by Wilson Audio, as well as mastering-grade stereo monitoring on a custom Tannoy system by Chris Pelonis.

Lower that cheese flag dude! Mark talked about writing music for sync that is fun and relatable without being too obvious, building a hotel studio in Mexico, placing music in feature films, using the iPhone mic, horn arrangments, and Shruti boxes.

My guest today is Mark Rudin, an accomplished artist, producer, and songwriter with a masterful command of multiple instruments - particularly horns. His song "Miracle" was a winner on season 2 of the NBC show Songland, and his work has been featured in major ad campaigns for brands such as Grey Goose and Simple Mills, as well as trailers for the Tom and Jerry Movie and the movie, Easter Sunday. RSR451 – Brad Wood – Recording Rock Bands & Mixing In Atmos

Send Santa's sleighbells to the chimney object of course! Brad talked about recording awesome drums, creating your own snare and kick samples, how to get a great kick drum sound, how to capture a guitar DI without the buzz, and mixing 9.1.4 in Atmos.

My guest today is Brad Wood, a producer originally from Chicago where he had Idful Music Corporation - a small but mighty recording studio in Wicker Park. There he recorded albums by bands like Seam, Tar, Shrimp Boat and Eleventh Dream Day. In 1993 he produced Exile In Guyville for Liz Phair which became the catalyst for what became a very long and prosperous career as a producer and mixer.

Brad wrapped up the 90’s with many debut albums under his belt, including Sunny Day Real Estate‘s Diary, Veruca Salt‘s American Thighs, Placebo’s self-titled LP, Placebo, and Ben Lee‘s Grandpaw Would. He also notably produced the Original Broadway Cast Recording for Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Throughout the iconic decade, Brad also worked with bands such as Far, that dog., Menthol, Pete Yorn, and The Smashing Pumpkins’ Adore (which peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200 charts).

Later Brad relocated to Los Angeles, California, where he built Seagrass Studio where he’s tracked and mixed for Say Anything, mewithoutyou, The Bangles, Sherwood, Touché Amoré, and many other artists. I am excited to have Brad back on the podcast again. You can catch his earlier episode RSR095 when he talked about his work in Chicago and moving to LA. Today we will catch up with Brad to see what’s new at Seagrass Studio and talk about producing and mixing in Atmos among other things.

RSR447 – Steve Genewick – The Beatles & Mixing Miles Davis in Atmos

Make mine a phantom center! Steve talked about the birth of mixing in Atmos, recording strings for the last Beatles song, Now And Then, how to record immersively, building a home mixing studio, mics for strings, object bed mixing, and the LFE sub.

My guest today is Steve Genewick a Grammy-nominated recording engineer with 30 years of experience, both as a studio and live recording and mix engineer. Steve has had the pleasure of working at iconic recording studios around the world such as United Recording, East West Studios, Sunset Sound and Village Recorders in Los Angeles, Abbey Road and Angel studios in London and La Fabrique Studios in France.

For 20 years, Steve had the great honor of working alongside the legendary 23-time Grammy award-winning producer and engineer, Al Schmitt. They worked with artists such as Diana Krall, Chris Botti, Gladys Knight, Neil Young, George Benson, Quincy Jones, Burt Bacharach and Paul McCartney. Steve also joined Al for “Mix With The Masters” seminars for nine years in the south of France, in addition to collaborating on their instructional film “The Art of Recording a Big Band”.

Steve worked primarily out of the famed Capitol Studios in Hollywood as a staff engineer from 1994 to 2022. At Capitol, he worked with countless renowned artists such as Elton John, Bastille and Trisha Yearwood. Steve was among the first studio mixers to begin mixing music in Dolby Atmos, working on projects with Beck, Gregory Porter, LL Cool J, Sam Smith and Niall Horan, and on the popular video game Apex Legends.

In 2017, Steve received the Pensado Award for Best Recording Engineer. He was also a part of the Universal Audio and Capitol Studios team that won a 2020 TEC Award for their Capitol Chambers plugin.

RSR446 – Sara Carter – How To EQ Everything in Your Home Studio!

Trust your first instinct! Sara talked about setting up your monitors for accurate mixing, how to place your subwoofer, learning to balance a mix first, why 85db is too loud, the power of a high pass filter, group vs solo audition, and mixing vocals.

My guest today is Sara Carter, a BBC trained mixing engineer based in Leicester (pronounced “lester”) in the UK. Sara started recording and mixing music as a hobby in the mid-90s then later turned it into a full-time career after studying Audio Engineering at the SAE Institute in London and working as a Sound Engineer for the BBC.

Sara learned her trade at the BBC's Maida Vale Studios by working under the mentorship of some of the best engineers in the business. During this time, Sara worked with a wide variety of artists such as Adele, The Black Keys and Rod Stewart to name a few. More recently she focuses on helping home studio musicians mix music at home through her training courses, coaching sessions and YouTube channel, Simply Mixing.

This is largely due to the host Lij's wonderful manner - warm and playful, and self-deprecating almost to a fault. Personality aside, it is clear that Lij possesses a wealth of experience and knowledge extending to all areas of sound, recording and production. He also has a wonderful range of guests on the show, so rather than just listen to engineer after engineer talk gear, you might one day hear an acoustician talking spaces, and the next a songwriter talking processes and giving practical tips. And of course there are a couple of engineers in the mix (excuse the pun). And what might at times seem highbrow and beyond the reach of many aspiring students of recording, Lij is able to condense into simple 'take-aways' - a credit to his broad understanding of all things sonic, but also to the needs of (some of) his audience. Thanks a lot Lij and keep up the great work!

The times I’ve made a comment on Twitter or FB he has replied back and even poked me about a typo that still makes me laugh sometimes when I hear him joke around with his guests. The cool thing is he gets his guests to tell stories and you never know what coolness will come from it, hell sometimes I find out I’m doing things real producers and engineers do!!!

This is actually the 1st Podcast I'm reviewing (which says a lot) because it's THE BEST ONE FOR RECORDING/MIXING/MASTERING! I've been listening to Lij's Podcast for the past 6 mos or so and I'm hooked! I'm a drummer and have a jam band here in Denver, CO. I started recording my band on a handheld recorded about 6 years ago, moved to multitracking in Garageband and have been a Logic Pro X user for the past 3 or so years. Needless to say, I've caught the recording/mixing bug and my skills have been steadily improving thanks to all those that share their knowledge. Thanks for this Lij!!!

I am really enjoying this podcast, especially when the interviewees talk more about recording approaches / gear / studio tips. The only thing that gets me about this show is when the audience is referred to as “rock stars”. It makes me cringe - every time. Going back to referring to us as “listeners” would be a good move. I’m only being so blunt about this because i feel like it would greatly improve the quality of professionalism that I feel this show has the potential of gaining. Thanks for reading

I run a small studio and subscribe to a number of audio-based podcasts. Each serves an important role. I cam across Recording Studio Rockstars and was intrigued by the name. After listening to a current one I went back to the first one and listened to each on sequentially. Many had interviews with people I never previoulsy heard of or presented topics I was sure would not be relevant to my situation. Without exception I always took away new useful information and tips for some facet of the audio world. Lij has a natural way about him and tends to ask questions of his guests almost at the moment I was starting to ask myself. Great work, Lij. Keep it up! If you're ever in California, drop by and we'll have our own "Jam Session."

I've only dug into home recording in the last few years and the knowledge you can pick up on this show is killer. This sounds like an overstatement, but it's not. That's what this has been for me. Lij Shaw interviews people in the business of recording, mixing, mastering, production, songwriting and all things "recording studio". In addition to his own studio chops and experience, he has developed an excellent talent for interviewing the other pros, drawing out the classic tales of missteps, mayhem and meant-to-be happy accidents. Nostalgia, humor and minutiae pervade, but so do legitimate insider tips and tricks. Not all guests are created equal, but on the rare near-snoozers, I find myself listening more to Lij and cheering him on. Thanks to Lij and the different pros that he has exposed his listeners to, I have actually learned how to mix songs. I'm still learning, but suddenly finishing a long lost dream to release my own solo album is within my grasp. If you are interested in recording music, tune in to this podcast. Listen and learn. Lij rocks!

Like few other recording engineers, Lij actually takes the time to be thorough and to make sure both new students and seasoned professionals grasp the concepts he is teaching. This guy has more tricks in his bag than the great Houdini and the best part is that he's willing to share them with us. This is more than just a podcast, it's a Treasure Trove of invaluable information that has changed the way I engineer and brought me to new levels of thinking about my studio and what it actually means to be an engineer. Lij is most definitely part guru!

Full disclosure...I have made many records with Lij (host of RSR). He knows a studio, effects, plug ins, mics, all of it at a truly Ninja level. The fact that he is giving away his 25 years of knowledge as well as interviewing other incredibly knowledgeable engineers and producers is amazing...not to mention extremely generous. I highly recommend adding this show to your weekly podcast diet. Enjoy!!!

Lij Shaw is talented, knowledgeable, passionate and knows how to talk about the studio in ways that non-professionals can understand. This isn’t his first Podcast, but this subject is one he knows extremely well. He stays busy in E. Nashville because he is a great human being, with great ears who knows how to listen and communicate, and delivers the highest quality musical product for his clients. He mastered my first ever solo release this May and it sounds incredible. This is a must listen for anyone interested in the recording studio and wants to learn how to improve their craft, whether it’s a songwriter, studio musician, or studio engineer.

These podcasts cover a lot of great info! Hey are especially helpful to people just getting started in the recording industry and those who have been doing it professionally. Lij asks his guests questions all beginners ask at some point. My favorite question is, "if you were dropped into a random city, what recording equipment would you use, how would you find people to record, and how would you make ends meet while you do it." Keep them coming!

A killer podcast that delivers great interviews with experienced studio professionals, relating their stories of hard-won studio success, frustration, failure, hilarity and everything in-between… hence the name "Recording Studio Rock Stars". Cool, colorful, informative and fun. Covers the artistic and technical aspects of recording with equal poise and skill. Perhaps its greatest strength is the balance between the artistic methods and vagaries of the studio and the technical details that make studios work day-to-day. If you're interested in how studios work– or are a professional yourself, and just love hearing great studio stories– you should definitely have a listen!
